Hello my name is Evelyn Spence, welcome to my website.
They say your career is shaped as a child, and looking back I was always making clothes. It started with dolls, but I didn’t stop there;, I loved to try and cut cloth to fit a shape, and our animals had to be very tolerant as they quite often hosted a number of my “creations”. As a teenager I progress to people and, at 16, when I had to leave school it was this line that I would follow.
Living in Kintail in the West Coast of Scotland meant that I would have to leave home to pursue a career, and the big town (as it was then) of Inverness beckoned, A 5 year apprenticeship in Kiltmaking was available there, and with not a second thought I jumped at the chance, blissfully unaware of where it would all lead.
After serving my apprenticeship I took a break from Kiltmaking for a couple of years, but when I had my family and money was tight I started doing a little again to help pay the bills. As time progressed the “little” grew and I decided that it was time to move the business out of my home, when we would remove 26 rolls of velvet from our bed to get into it at night and then put them back in the morning!.
Time and the business has progressed, I started to make Highland dance outfits to SOBHD standard, and then the lure of creative designing came back to the fore. Studying Scottish Heritage through the centuries has allowed me to use tartan to reproduce 16th, 17th and 18th century clothes for the followers all things traditionally Scottish.
I do hope you will take the time to have a look at my website. And please remember that every garment is made just for you, so if you don’t see in the following pages what you want, that does not mean it is not available, or can be commissioned. Just give me a ring and I will be happy to make it for you.
For a garment as individual as you, is only a call away.
